In Equal Measure

It doesn't make sense to blame the year.

Other people can be blamed for tardy and inappropriate actions and we can be blamed for not always giving our best - but blaming a year makes no sense at all.

The world does not reboot on 1 January. We are not in a television show.

Revisiting some of my earlier blog posts on the strange circumstances in which we find ourselves charts the almost unbelievable developments of the last 10 months.

From the enormity of the situation becoming apparent, back in March, through the infested waters of May swiftly followed by highlighting the shame of my generation and then coming up to date with the notion that all people either create or destroy - yes, it all makes for a startling narrative.

We all know people who haven't made it through the emergency. Some have been taken by the virus and others in ways almost certainly related to the situation. Some were take by their own hand; others by illnesses exacerbated by the dark and depressing times in which we live.

It is hard to see a way through the lies and incompetence and it is pointless to dwell on who did or didn't do as they should have done. Suffice to say, washing hands to the tune of Happy Birthday was extremely unlikely to ever be an effective frontline defence against an artificially enhanced virus which was always going to bring the world to its knees for at least two years.

The emergence of new spikes and virus mutations were always extremely predictable. People are angry, bored, lonely and confused. Of course a significant number of them will break the rules, either occasionally or regularly.

It will take some time for the long-term effects of the virus to be known and the side effects of the bewildering array of vaccines which have all somehow appeared simultaneously will also take time to manifest themselves.

Forget the blame game; it is far too easy. Let's go inward.

The lives of every person have been changed. Physically, mentally, emotionally; so much has changed. Who can claim to have changed for the better? Who has not aged more in the last few months than during any other comparable time span?

The stronger of the people amongst us have a responsibility to help anyone who is struggling, for so many reasons; not least of which is the certainty that the roles can be reversed at any time. Who can make the clown laugh?

Personally, the last few months have presented to me the challenge of navigating the steepest learning curve since I started working for myself, back in 1988. The challenges have been different this time and certain aspects of my life have changed beyond recognition.

Some friends have drifted away; others have become much closer. Events, dreams and desires are all seen from a new perspective. When the darkness descends I endure a tidal wave of emotions and it seems every wasted opportunity and every mistake I ever made are all etched more deeply in my mind. Keep busy; keep creative.

Very few things will ever return to how they were and that will take a lot of getting used to. In fact, the world as we know has had it and my advice is to await the opportunity to squeeze as much fun out of life as you possibly can, before it is too late.

To bring this mini-series of posts full circle, I will say again: We are all valuable and fragile in equal measure.

Where do we go from here?

Influential Music of 2020

This has obviously been a very difficult year, with the arts suffering very badly.

Musical experiences have been few and far between. When it comes to new releases, these are the five I have listened to the most.

Jah Wobble remained very active during 2020, putting out lockdown tracks with impressive regularity. He (together with the Invaders of the Heart) was one of the very few people I saw 'live' this year. The timing turned out to be extremely fortunate.

Jah put his new material out on two strictly limited CDs (just 100 of each). I have even more admiration for his work now than ever before.

Reissued material from Iggy Pop's 'Bowie Years.' In fact it was a good year for Iggy Pop releases, with two more significant compilations: You Think You're Bad, Man? - The Road Tapes 73-74 and From K.O. to Chaos - The Complete Skydog Iggy Pop and The Stooges Collection.

The songs and their delivery provide a timely reminder of the important of resilience, defiance and energy.

This was a surprise. Get Back Into The World is by the Sensible Gray Cells. They are The Damned's   Captain Sensible and Paul Gray, together with Johnny Moped drummer Marty Love.

The humour is impish; the songs catchy. There is also a decent amount of observational material.

Stray Cats at their best. This album features tracks from various nights of their excellent 2019 tour. I reminder of how things were - giving rise to the desire for a return to normal as soon as possible.

Project 30 Chessmas Zoom Quiz


The previous Project 30 Zoom quizzes for both adults and juniors had been very well received and for the Chessmas Special I thought it would be fun to combine the two groups and invite even more people besides.

This was our second event in three days and it followed hard on the heels of the 11th Mike Closs Memorial Tournament.

The questions ranged from Christmas song lyrics to tricky chess puzzles and even included a memory test.

The participants included juniors, parents, strong club players, CSC tutors, colleagues and, of course friends.

Nevil, Natasha, Paul Weightman, Zac, Mike and Alice were all making their Project 30 Quiz debuts. The icing on the Chessmas cake was definitely when the great Kineke Mulder joined us from Austria.

Chess-wise, Adrian Thomas of the Voodoo Sheiks is a self-confessed non-player, but he more than makes up for it the questions which do not involve chess moves!

John Garnett looked to have seized victory when we counted up the scores, but - wait! - we had promised bonus points for those who dared to dress up for the occasion. Suddenly, Mike and Alice overtook John, thanks to the bonus points earned by their festive accoutrements.

11th Mike Closs Memorial Tournament

The 11th Mike Closs Memorial Tournament continued the long-running series of events in fine style.

I didn't want to miss a year in the roll of honour of this series, which meant an enforced switch to an online event. This did have some advantages, especially regarding the people I could invite who would not normally be able to attend.

Indeed, thanks to the very welcome participation of Kineke Mulder, it was our first international tournament of the series.

For 2011, I wanted:

A fun celebratory event, continuing the series I set up to honour my late friend, Mike Closs.

A welcome distraction from the strange events of 2020.

Time spent with friends.

The players were an excellent group of my former juniors, work colleagues, teammates and fellow CSC tutors. Most of all, they are all very loyal friends of mine. All have helped me considerably over the course of many years (many decades, in some cases).

The players contested a five-round Swiss tournament and the games were very lively.

Last night I imagined Mike Closs and I were watching and enjoying the games together, just like we always used to. He would have enjoyed the feast of fun and chess.

Best of the Year: 2020

It can be a difficult task to nominate the best gigs of the year.

Last year, despite being to more gigs than ever before, the choice was made easy by the four Stray Cats concerts.

For 2020, I can easily fit the best gigs into my top 10 and, unfortunately, there is still room to spare. I can even post my annual 'Best of the Year' selection early, safe in the knowledge that there will be no more gigs between now and 2021.

I enjoyed every gig I attended in 2020 but early in March the shows suddenly came to and end. I had a large of amount of new gigs lined up. Some are still hoping to go ahead on rescheduled dates; others have gone for good.

Well, these were definitely the top eight shows of 2020 and I loved every minute of each one.

They are presented chronologically and the links situated beneath each image will take you to the Marsh Towers reviews for each one.

Just looking at these photographs and revisiting my reviews brings back the excitement and joy live music brings to my life. My heart rate increases; my feet start to move and I want to sing...

Oh well; maybe next year.

Teaching Adult Beginners

Mark Rivlin, editor of the newsletter for the English Chess Federation, contacted me recently to ask for a few thoughts on teaching chess to adult beginners. This was for a piece he was writing on the ECF website.

Here are some thoughts on teaching adult beginners.

One of the biggest mistakes made when teaching anyone how to play chess is dumbing down the material. This applies mainly to juniors but can also happen with adults.

Here are some pointers:

A coach may feel uncomfortable when teaching juniors and hides in an over-reliance on the teacher/pupil status. This fails to take into account the two-way process of the learning experience.

A coach is unable to convey the message from a position of greater skill and experience.

The desire - on either a conscious or subconscious level - to prove to the student the teacher is superior.

These - and other mistakes - build walls and project boundaries that can be difficult to overcome. There are other mistakes just waiting to be made when teaching adults how to play chess.

These include:

Being unable to take the lesson seriously, which can become a scenario of two friends chatting.

Not understanding the skills necessary to successfully convey the message to a pupil who could be of an age equal to - or greater - than the tutor.

Not structuring the ongoing work and lessons as one would do when teaching juniors.

A fault common to teaching both juniors and adults is the use of money as the sole motivation. Without wishing to stray too far into the tautological territory of false gods, I am sure we are all familiar with teachers who are clearly counting up their figures as they simultaneously count down their days to retirement.

Successful teaching requires, as a starting point, a potent desire to enrich the lives of others and a passion for the subject in question.

The dubious art of dumbing down is on the increase. One cannot help but notice the familiar patterns whenever chess is featured on the news. The presenters simply have to smirk, sheepishly, while they reveal how bad they are at playing chess. Then it seems obligatory to follow through with, ‘Mind you, I’m good at checkers.’

Placed against such a backdrop, the reasons people pitch their lessons incorrectly when teaching adults is understandable. An additional factor can be added: the vast majority of chess tutors are not trained teachers.

This particular obstacle can be overcome as the tutors develop their own style and build up a significant amount of experience.

However, the situation will always be problematic until the almost-universal dumbing down is countered.

Some people want to learn how to play chess merely to enjoy playing the game. Others want to learn the basics and then improve their skills and enter tournaments. No one approach is better than any other in this respect. There is more than enough room for everyone in the chess world.

The average person who plays chess will never elevate their ratings to a level that the majority of established players will find impressive. There is a great deal of snobbery in chess and giving the human brain a number is good way to ensure it continues.

Good tutors will avoid the pitfalls noted above and will treat all students with the greatest of respect - whether they are juniors or adults. They will ensure the lessons have relevant content and are not excuses to show off their own talent or to talk down to ‘lesser’ players.

Patience is required from both sides. Adults will find some aspects very hard to grasp, just as juniors do.

If a tutor or experienced chess player would like to put themselves in the new student’s shoes then all it needs is for the tutor to try doing something new. For instance, try learning how to play a musical instrument. Then think about how long you would keep it up if you had a tutor for music lessons and they were obviously frustrated by your lack of talent or just wanted to show how much better than you they are with the instrument.

There is an enormous difference between dumbing something down and making it more accessible. The two are not as interchangeable as people would have you believe.

In the wise words of Anna from the rather appropriate The King and I:

‘It's a very ancient saying,

But a true and honest thought,

That if you become a teacher,

By your pupils you'll be taught.’


Advice for Beginners

Learn the very basics of a small number of openings (one for White; two for Black - to cater for 1 e4 and 1 d4 by the opponents).

Learn how to finish off an opponent when you have a much superior force. Just knowing a few standard checkmates will considerably increase your confidence and results.

Practice.

Do not neglect chess books. There is an enormous variety on the market. Take advice from experienced players regarding which books would best suit your current playing strength.

Play through the moves of your games and try to understand where you went wrong and what you need to do to avoid the same mistakes happening next time.

Try solving a small number of tactical chess puzzles, several times a week.

Practice.

Do not be afraid of playing against higher-rated players. You would like to beat them, but you cannot do so without playing them.

Analyse the games yourself before you use a computer to do so. This will improve your own analytical powers and when you compare notes with the chess engine you will also see what sort of tactics you are missing.

Practice.

Vary your tournaments. Play in some in which you think you will do well and choose others in which you are aiming to gather experience and gain knowledge.

Set sensible targets for yourself before each tournament.

Practice.

Go to your local chess club (when allowed to do so).

Keep going through the pain-barrier of defeats. Accept that 'you either win, or you learn.'

Remember that every chess player in the world was once a total novice. The ones who are good players now simply had more determination to keep going.

The Delancey UK Schools' Chess Challenge 2020-21

We are delighted to report that the long-running UK Chess Challenge has been confirmed for the school year 2020-21.

The current emergency had an unfortunate impact on chess but Sarah and Alex Longson rose to the challenge and somehow managed to move all of the stages from the Megafinal onwards online during 2020.

This was a magnificent achievement and it ensured juniors from all across the United Kingdom could continue to enjoy competitive chess despite chess clubs having to endure an enforced hiatus.

Sarah and Alex have worked very hard indeed to adapt the event to cater for all of the unexpected challenges.

Big plans are in place for 2020-21 and entries are being taken right now.

An Interview with Adrian Thomas

My recent post, Create or Destroy, included an offer:

Today we enter the world of British Rhythm and Blues and welcome Adrian Thomas to our series of interviews.

Adrian plays with The Voodoo Sheiks, who have been featured here at Marsh Towers once before. That was back in 2014, when I reviewed their Borrowed and New album. Looking back on the review, I find I took the Voodoo Sheiks to task a little, as I wanted to hear more of their original songs amongst the cover versions.

Adrian and I have been friends (in a virtual world) for a long time now. Despite claiming to know nothing about chess, he even participated in our most recent Project 30 Zoom Quiz - outscoring several established chess stars along the way.

Who introduced you to music?

My Mum and Dad had a collection of 45s which I used to play on their mono record player. I was introduced to the likes of Des O’Connor, The Hollies, Connie Francis, Leapy Lee and Cliff Richard, Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich, The Bonzo Dog Doo-dah Band plus many more.

Dad always had the transistor radio on in the mornings and at the weekend so there was a constant musical atmosphere in the house, including an upright piano in the living room!

Are any members of your family active, musically?

My elder brother plays guitar and bass. He’s in a couple church bands and has his own three-piece rock band. He helped source my first two drum kits!

How old were you when you realised music was going to be a major part of your life?

I was about five years old when I became interested in listening to music. As previously mentioned there was always music on in the house somewhere.

How would you describe your musical style?

My general musical style I would say is rock with a sprinkle of blues. I was brought up on The Sweet, The Beatles, Dr. Feelgood and Deep Purple.

Tell me how the Voodoo Sheiks started out.

Crikey, I’ll try and keep it short as it’s a longish story!

Slowblow Dave was putting a band together with original drummer John Coombes and bass player, Bob Francis. They were looking for a guitarist and I had previously auditioned for another band that Bob had tried to put together but never amounted to anything.

Bob called me and said they were looking for a guitarist would I like to audition. I went along with a few other guitarists and well, here I am still! After just two gigs, Bob decided he’d had enough and left the band.

We auditioned a few bassists and Andy was the man for the job. I’d actually known Andy from our days at ACM Guildford in 2005/06.

Can you tell me something about your creative process? Are you writing songs more or less all of the time, or do you have to take time out from other aspects of your life in order to fully focus?

Personally, I’m not a prolific songwriter, so I’m not writing all the time. If I am writing then I do indeed have to take time out and focus on the task in hand.

Do you write better on your own, or with the help of others?

I definitely write better with other people. I tend to bounce off their creativity and come up with ideas as we go along.

What usually comes first – the music or the words?


If I’m writing with The Voodoo Sheiks then it can be either. Often, Dave will have a whole set of lyrics ready to go and I’ll come up with a riff or chord sequence and we fit it together. A lot of the band’s songs have been guitar ideas from which we have built upon.

How do you balance your musical career and aspirations with the ‘real life’?


I’ve been a professional musician since 2002 so everything has revolved around that. Real life is my music - until recently, when everything was turned on its head!
What interests do you have outside of music?

Outside of music I like keeping fit by going to the gym. I love walking the dog in the forest where we live. I enjoy standup comedy and some comedy-style panel shows. A good film is always an escape too.

Are you available for lessons?

Yes, I am available for lessons. Normally I do one to one lesson at my home studio but since March when everything changed, I now only do online lessons via Zoom.

You play your own, original songs but also have a full repertoire of cover songs with The Voodoo Sheiks. Is the former body of work easier to remember and play than the latter?


Now that’s a good question! I would say yes, original songs are easier to remember as you’ve been involved in the creation from start to finish. You know every dynamic of the song!

Having said that, I’ve been playing with covers band for years and some of those songs I can play on autopilot!

Are there any internal battles within The Voodoo Sheiks when it comes to choosing the set lists? Are there any songs that you really wanted to include, but didn’t?

No internal battles, it’s all very amicable. Dave tends to sort the set lists but he knows what we like to play but you can’t play every song at every gig so we chop and change the set as we see fit according to venue and gig type!

Which artists/groups do you most admire?

That’s a tough one because I admire anyone who has made a success out of music. Whether they be famous or otherwise. I know a ton of musicians that are industry professionals and they teach, record, tour etc. but unless you actually know them you wouldn’t have heard of them.

As far as famous artists are concerned, I’d say I admire Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr for different reasons. I also think that Nine Below Zero are to be admired for evolving through the years and continuing writing, recording and touring.

Which albums would make it onto your desert island list?

I just think about the albums that I have probably played the most over the years. ‘Flying In a Blue Dream’- Joe Satriani, ‘Made In Japan’- Deep Purple, ‘Malpractice’- Dr. Feelgood, ‘Sweet Fanny Adams’- The Sweet, ‘Escape’- Journey, ‘Departure’- Journey

Which song do you wish you had written?

It’s either ‘Smoke On The Water’ - it’s such a great riff and a catchy, singable chorus, or ‘Burn’, another Deep Purple classic. Ritchie Blackmore is a genius at writing memorable riffs.

The Internet has impacted greatly on the music industry. What are the good and bad points from your point of view?

I suppose the obvious bad points are that music has become almost give away and that the cost of recording and pressing CDs is never recouped at this level due to downloading etc.

The good points are that you can reach a worldwide audience with all your social media and music distribution etc.

For your dream gig, with whom would you love to perform?

Deep Purple or Journey.

Are you nervous before the gigs?

I’m not nervous but I just want to get started, so the waiting around after you’ve set up and sound checked makes me slightly anxious! When I was younger I used to get very nervous to the point where, for the first few numbers my hands were shaking!

You have just left the stage at the end of the shows. You have connected with – and entertained – every person in the hall; a success by anyone’s standards. How does it feel?

It feels amazing! Especially if you’ve really connected and people are coming up to you, chatting and buying merchandise.

How long does it take you to wind down afterwards?

Like the above answer, it does depend on the venue and the gig! When you play a big stage to a large room then you are buzzing when you come off stage. If it’s a smaller pub type gig then whilst it’s still a buzz you don’t get the same adrenalin rush.

What are your most memorable gigs of your own?

The most memorable gig of my own was when we played The Half Moon, Putney in 2016. We played there a few times but this was the first time we’d headlined and it was a real blast.

How about memorable gigs by other artists or bands?

The one that always sticks in my mind is seeing Whitesnake at Hammersmith Odeon in 1980. There was a real atmosphere and place was electric, the band were absolutely in the zone!

Is there anyone you have never seen play ‘live,’ but would like to (have done)?

This is an interesting one as I have turned down tickets to see some amazing gigs which I have later regretted. Zeppelin at Knebworth, U2 in 1980 and my local Sports Centre, Pink Floyd - The Wall at Earls Court 1979-ish and The Killers at a small club in Reading when they were virtually unknown!
I understand you have recently switched from guitar to drums for the Voodoo Sheiks. Why the change and with which instrument do you feel the strongest natural connection?

Over the last two to three years I started to developing psoriasis on my hands and finger tips. I didn’t know what it was but it made it more and more difficult and painful to play guitar for prolonged periods. I recently saw a specialist who diagnosed it as psoriasis.

I’m currently using various emollients and hand washes to get on top of it but it still seems to be fighting back!

I started drumming when I was about 10 and got my first kit on my 11th birthday. I have always felt comfortable behind a drum kit. Whilst guitar became my number one instrument, I always kept playing drums and have gigged many times with an assortment of bands.

Switching was an easy choice as I can still play with my hand condition although it takes its toll I can at least strap my hand up which you can’t do if playing guitar!

I would definitely say that drumming is my strongest natural connection.

What advice would you give to anyone starting out in the world of music?

You have to love what you do. Be positive and believe in yourself. Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks but of course take on constructive criticism and advice along the way.

I know a lot of people who seem to be seeking approval before they do anything like, “do you want to hear some new music from me” or “If I gig will you book me”, just do the music and get the gigs!

The entertainment industry has been very badly hit by the pandemic. How do you think the Government has handled the situation?

I don’t think it was handled very well. The Government didn’t act quickly enough and then weren’t definite on actual do’s and don’ts!

What would you have done differently?

I’d have been more assertive and definite about the rules!

How long do you think it will be before the emergency clears?

I really couldn’t say. It’s unchartered territory! I’m hoping that by spring it’ll be as good as
over!

Do you think most things will recover (in time) or do you take a more pessimistic view?

I’d like to think that most things will recover but inevitably some things won’t. It’s had a massive financial impact on the world and the live music industry has been particularly hard hit – who knows how many venues will be closed permanently?

What is in the pipeline from the Voodoo Sheiks? Have you been active during the entirety of 2020 or has everything been on hold during the lockdowns?

Well, I’ve continued with my teaching throughout 2020 - doing my lessons online instead of face-to-face. With regards to the Voodoos - we’ve been keeping in contact and brought in a new guitarist to replace me whilst I step over to the drums.

We managed a few rehearsals in between lockdowns and have written some new tunes. I’ll be heading to a recording studio in the very near future, to track the drums for three new tunes then we’ll most likely record the rest remotely.

I can’t wait to get out and gig again, and with me on the drums, it’ll be a whole new vibe!

ChessTech 2020 Update

.

The ChessTech 2020 Conference is now just over one week away.

There will be a veritable bonanza of chess talk, demonstrations, presentations and various other events over the weekend of 5-6 December.

Basic tickets are free and there is an opportunity to purchase a Professional Ticket for £50, which will give exclusive access to several parts of the conference.

It will be a meeting of minds like no other and promises to be a very positive experience amid the otherwise desolate landscape of 2020.

250 people have already registered and we are creeping towards full capacity.

The full programme is about to be unveiled, so keep a close eye on the official website.

Project 30 November Zoom Quiz

The third edition of the Project 30 Zoom Quiz was the biggest and best to date.


The quiz has now gone international, thanks to the involvement of Kineke Mulder of Chess Unlimited.





Jo Hutchinson and Adrian Thomas (one of the kings of British Rythm and Blues - check out the Voodoo Sheiks) were among those also making their debuts in this strictly-by-invitation series of events.



David Hardy is the champion, with John Garnett runner-up and Sean Cassidy third.

Thank you, everyone, for a fabulous, fun evening.




Incidentally, some of the answers I received for the lyrics question were not only incorrect, but also anatomically impossible.

ChessTech 2020

The London Chess Conference will be held on the weekend of Saturday 5 - Sunday 6 December.

Circumstances have rather forced our hand to make the entire conference and online affair. 

However, there is an element of serendipity here as the theme was already set as Chess and Technology.

Excellent New Magazine: Chess Tales

We have excellent news for everyone involved with junior chess.

Chess Tales

Chess Tales is an English translation of the German Rochade Kids chess magazine.

Teesside helped to test the content of the magazine and there is another link too; Royce Parker, my good friend and teammate, is the translator.

The material is excellent and fully engaging.

You don't need to take my word for it, as you can see the contents of the first issue here.

Additionally, UK schools can claim one free copy of the magazine by clicking here.

Approximately 25,000 children use the magazine in Germany. I believe it to be a very valuable set of resources, which will work in the classroom scenario and also in one-to-one lessons.

International Master Tobias Hirneise is the editor of Chess Tales and he is offering a discount of 50% to schools ordering 10 or more copies of the first issue.
