Junior Chess Championship
Teesside High School
Stockton-on-Tees
Saturday 13th October
Our first individual junior chess championship of the season was well attended. Our recent new-season drive to encourage more people to participate in chess tournaments was rewarded by the appearance of around 90% of the championship being made up of players making their tournament debuts.
The entry was a 50-50 split of boys and girls. The ages ranged from six year-olds to those currently in school Year 6!
Thomas Batchelor, Becky Donaldson, Niall Garner, Adya Trivedi and Josh White all won their first two games (of five), setting up some high-class third round clashes.
Going into the last round, only Niall and Adya had maintained their maximum scores. They met in the final round and Niall powered his way through to a fine win and a memorable 5/5.
Thus, Niall took undisputed first place in the Y5 & Y6 category. Adya, despite her last-round loss, had done more than enough to earn first place in the Y4 (and under) category.
The two champions took home book prizes; all players received a certificate.
Full Scores
